KDP paperback revision checklist: what to recheck after an interior edit

A revised interior can be a valid PDF while making a previously accepted cover the wrong size. The critical link is page count → spine width → full-wrap cover width.

Short answer: if the final page count changes, recalculate the spine and full-wrap cover dimensions before replacing either file. Then review the revised interior and revised cover as one pair in KDP Print Previewer.

Why a small page-count change affects the cover

KDP calculates paperback spine width from the final page count and paper type. Its current submission guidance gives these per-page factors:

Black-and-white, white paper: page count × 0.002252 in
Black-and-white, cream paper: page count × 0.0025 in
Groundwood paper: page count × 0.00235 in
Color paper: page count × 0.002347 in

Example: adding 20 pages changes a white-paper spine by 0.045040 in and a cream-paper spine by 0.0500 in. Both the cover canvas and the position of spine content may need to change.

The full-wrap cover width is the back cover width + spine width + front cover width + outside bleed. A cover can therefore remain technically readable as a PDF but no longer match the revised interior.

Seven checks before uploading a paperback revision

Keep the accepted pair. Preserve the interior and full-wrap cover files that belong to the currently live edition. They are your baseline, not a guarantee of future acceptance.
Export the revised interior first. Count pages only after final layout at the intended trim size and bleed setting.
Confirm locked print settings. A published paperback's trim size cannot normally be changed as a simple metadata update. Verify ink/paper and edition constraints in current KDP help.
Recalculate the spine. Use the revised page count and the selected paper factor. Do not reuse an old cover template merely because the trim size stayed the same.
Rebuild or verify the full wrap. Check total width, total height, outside bleed, spine placement and safe areas against KDP's current template.
Run PDF checks. Confirm embedded fonts, consistent page geometry, no crop marks or annotations, and images suitable for print. KDP currently recommends at least 300 DPI for images.
Use KDP Print Previewer and a proof. A third-party report is an earlier warning layer, not an Amazon acceptance or print-quality guarantee.
